Amira is the General Manager and one of the co-founders of Mada Masr, an independent news website covering Egypt in English and Arabic, owned and operated by a group of progressive journalists and editors. Her experience is mainly in business and economic reporting and editing, and she has written for a number of local and international publications. She is a regular contributor to the Financial Times and has written for The Africa Report as well as The BRICS Post. After graduating from the American University in Cairo with a journalism degree, she worked as an assistant editor and writer at Egypt Today and Business Today Egypt magazines. She then went on to become the business editor of Daily News Egypt, where for five years she developed this section of the newspaper as well as trained young journalists to specialize in this field of reporting. She later went on to cofound The Egypt Monocle, an earlier attempt at launching a local English-language media website after the closure of DNE. She joined Egypt Independent in 2012 as the Deputy Editor, where she helped shape the newspaper’s coverage, coach reporters and coordinate efforts to increase commercial activity. It is with this team of journalists turned media entrepreneurs that she went on to cofound Mada Masr in June 2013. Amira has co-authored a book about Egypt’s 18-day uprising, which has so far been published in Italian and Arabic (“Tahrir Memoirs,” Dar Al Shorouq), and has an interest in poetry and creative writing. Last year, she helped launch a family business based in Maadi, a cultural café and community space called Mizan.
